Tigers defeat Terrapins 2-1

Tigers defeat Terrapins 2-1

Clemson, S.C. – On Saturday afternoon, Clemson United faced off with Big Ten foe Maryland in another exhibition match at Historic Riggs Field.

The game started with two early goals, one by each side. Maryland got on the board first in the 8th minute when a Terrapin attacker dribbled down the right side of the Tigers defense, crossed the ball in, and a teammate was waiting on the penalty spot to tap it in.

Clemson didn’t take long to respond. Sophomore Ousmane Sylla put on a skills showcase to beat three Terrapin defenders. He eventually got fouled in the box after nutmegging a defender. Sophomore Hamady Diop stepped up to take the penalty and slotted it home while sending the keeper to the opposite side.

In the 18th minute, sophomore goalkeeper Trevor Manion conceded a penalty to the Terrapins. He guessed the right way and stopped the penalty taker from scoring to keep the game square.

In the 75th minute, the Tigers scored the go-ahead goal thanks to freshman Tim Strobeck. Sophomore Enrique Montana beat two Terrapin defenders down the left side before taking a shot on goal. His shot was deflected and bounced right to Strobeck, who put it away for the Tigers.

Up next, the Tigers travel to Blacksburg to face off with Virginia Tech on Saturday, April 2.
