CLEMSON, S.C. —The Clemson track and field season started with a bang on Friday at the Clemson Opener. The first meet of the 2022-23 campaign featured several new Tigers eager to make their presence felt, as well as a strong group of returners ready to pick up where they left off.

Most notably, Wanya McCoy broke a school and facility record in the 300 meter with his incredible time of 32.53 seconds. That mark is good for third-best in NCAA history. Kiara Grant also made her way into the Clemson record books, securing a 7.29 second 60 meter dash time, earning her a tie for eighth on Clemson’s all-time list.

The Clemson Opener marked the first of four home meets for the Tigers this season, with seven total meets on the schedule prior to the ACC Championship Meet beginning on February 23.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Wanya McCoy set the school and facility record in the 300 meter run with an insane 32.53 time. That mark is third-best in NCAA history. He also won the 60 meter dash today with a 6.76.
  • Kiara Grant set a top-10 mark in the 60 meter dash prelims. Her 7.34 second time was best of any competitor in prelims and good for a tie for ninth-best in school history. She then won the competition in the finals with a 7.29, moving her into a tie for eighth all-time.
  • Mason Corbin tied for the top finish in the high jump with a 2.00 meter leap.
  • Daniel Cope won the weight throw competition with a 21.02 meter throw.
  • Shantae Foreman won the long jump with a leap of 5.86 meters.
  • Giano Roberts won the 60 meter hurdles with a 7.80 second time.
  • Brynne Sumner came in first place in the 1000 meter with a time of 2:51.54.
  • Gabriel Ludwick won the 1000 meter in his first meet competing for Clemson.
  • Marie Forbes dominated the weight throw, winning by over 6 meters with her 20.51 meter toss.
