Wake Forest defeats Clemson 4-3

WINSTON-SALEM, NC­Andrew Hamar of Wake Forest defeated Ryan Young of Clemson 6-7, 6-1, 7-6 at number three singles and clinching the match as the 13th-ranked Demon Deacons defeated the 22nd-ranked Tigers 4-3 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at Winston-Salem, NC Saturday.

The match had a three hour and 55 minute weather delay after the match was tied 3-3. The match between Young and Hamar was knotted at one set a piece with Young winning the third set 4-2 before the weather delay. After play was resumed, Hamar won three straight games and took a 5-4 advantage in the third and deciding set. Young tied the set 5-5. Hamar went ahead 6-5 in the set and Young again tied the set 6-6. In the tie breaker, Hamar won 11-9 to clinch the match for Wake Forest. This number three singles match lasted three hours and 18 minutes in actual play.

Wake Forest improves to 23-6 overall, while Clemson finishes its season with a 31-10 record. The Tigers’ 31 wins this season is tied for the second most victories in a single season.

Wake Forest won the doubles point winning at the number two and three flights. In singles, Wake Forest took a 2-0 advantage in the match as Cory Parr defeated Clement Reix of Clemson 6-1, 6-3 at number two singles.

The Deacons took a 3-0 lead when Steven Forman defeated Carlos Alvarez 6-4, 6-1 at number five singles.

Rok Bizjak of Clemson defeated Mariusz Adamski of Wake Forest 6-0, 6-4 at number four singles, making the score 3-1 in Wake Forest’s favor.

Ike Belk narrowed the Demon Deacon lead, 3-2 as he defeated Jason Morgenstern 6-3, 6-3 at number six singles.

At number one singles, Jarmaine Jenkins of Clemson upset 10th-ranked Todd Paul 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 and tying the match score 3-3, setting up the number three singles match as the deciding contest.

“Both teams laid it on the line today,” said Clemson Head Coach Chuck Kriese. Give the credit to Wake Forest. “Both players (Young and Hamar ) deserved the win. It was a tremendous match–it was one of the best sporting events you will see. Wake is a great program and we wish them well as they advance. The ACC was tremendous this year. We played hard today, and I couldn’t have ask more from my team.”

“Hamar earned it,” said Young. He played well, and I give him the credit.”
