Durham, N.C. – The Clemson men’s tennis team began singles tournament play at the ITA Carolina Regional on Friday. Due to a last-minute withdrawal, junior Jaxon Wiley entered into the tournament as a singles competitor.
Senior Gabriel Diaz Friere notched a pair of wins to start the tournament, defeating both Martin Rocens of NC State and Easton Thomas of Charleston 7-6 (4), 7-5 and 6-2, 6-0, respectively. Diaz With the victories, Diaz Freire advances to the singles main draw round of 32.
Five other Tigers also earned wins on the day with Yizhou Liu, Teodor Giusca and Carlos Kelaidis each earning victories in the tournament’s opening round. Mike Agee, who dropped to the consolation bracket, also picked up a victory in the second-round, battling back to beat Campbell’s Noe Macquart 2-6, 6-2, 10-8.
The tournament director also announced the doubles draw earlier today. Clemson will pair Giusca/Kelaidis, Agee/Wiley and Diaz Freire/Liu for doubles action. In addition, Diaz Freire/Liu earned a ranking of 9-16.
Action from Durham resumes tomorrow morning with doubles beginning at 10:30 am with another round of singles to follow later in the day.
