Tiger Swimming and Diving Swings Into Columbia For In-State Showdown

Nov. 2, 2006

CLEMSON, SC – The Clemson Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving teams will travel to Columbia, SC for their annual meet with in-state rival South Carolina on Friday, November 3. The meet will begin at 5 p.m. from the Carolina Natatorium. The Lady Tigers are 2-4 (2-3 ACC) on the season, and will look to avenge last year’s loss to South Carolina. The men are entering the meet 3-2 (2-2 ACC) after picking up two big victories against Virginia Tech and Penn State.

The Gamecock women are 2-3 on the season, and will face another tough meet as they take on Clemson. Sophomore Michelle Parkhurst has swept the 100 and 200 backstrokes in each of the meets for the Lady Tigers. Overall, Clemson is 13-17 against the South Carolina women, with their last victory coming in 2003-04.

On the men’s side, South Carolina is 2-2, but are coming off an upset victory against #23 Kentucky. Mark Vahle will lead the Tigers into the meet coming off a win in the 50 freestyle in two straight meets. He claimed first against Georgia Tech with a season best time of 20.34, and sprinted to a win last weekend with a time of 20.52. Clemson is 15-34-1 all-time versus the Gamecocks after their 187-108 victory a year ago.
