Clemson, S.C.—Clemson sophomore Marisa Messana qualified for the 2015 United States Amateur earlier this month with a 71 at the Vero Beach Golf Club in Vero Beach, Fla.  She is the first Clemson women’s golfer to qualify for the Women’s U.S. Amateur as a Clemson student.

Messana’s round of 71 tied for third in the field at the Vero Beach qualifier.  Anna Newell of Tampa, Fla was the medalist with a 69.  

Messana was third on the Clemson team in scoring average as a freshman with a 76.33 figure, but she was the top Tiger at the ACC Tournament with a three-over-par 219 and 21st place finish at the Sedgefield Country club course.  

The native of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.,  had a 4.0  GPA in her freshman year and was an Academic All-ACC selection as well as an All-American Scholar by the Women’s Golf Coaches Association.
