CLEMSON, SC – The 15th-ranked Clemson women’s tennis team defeated College of Charleston by a score of 6-1 in their season opener on Saturday in Clemson. The Tigers improve to 1-0 on the season, while the Cougars fall to 0-2. Clemson improves to 25-3 all-time in home opening matches.
In doubles play, Clemson’s 12th-ranked team of Maria Brito and Julie Coin defeated the Cougars’ Maxine Capewell and Gabriela Moreira by a score of 8-2 at flight one. At number two doubles, the Tigers’ Daniela Alvarez and Silvia Gutierrez won an 8-3 decision over Rachel Magory and Lauren Stewart. Clemson’s team of Richele LeSaldo and Karen Rombouts, ranked in a tie for 49th by the ITA in doubles, were victorious over College of Charleston’s Whitney Malina and Ashley Willis (8-2) at flight three.
In singles action, Clemson’s ninth-ranked Coin defeated Moreira by a score of 6-1, 6-1 at flight one. The Tigers’ Alvarez (#40) defeated Magory (6-0, 6-0) at two singles, while #78 Brito won a three set decision (6-3, 3-6, 6-3) over Malina at flight three. At number four singles, Clemson’s Rombouts was victorious over Capewell of College of Charleston by a score of 6-2, 6-2. The Tigers’ Gutierrez fell to the Cougars’ Andreea Niculescu by a score of 4-6, 7-5(9-11) at number five singles. At the six singles position, Ioana Paun of Clemson won a 6-0, 6-0 decision over the Cougars’ Jenna Marks.
The Tigers will face #32 Baylor on Sunday morning in Clemson. The match will be held at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center and is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m.
