CLEMSON, SC – Clemson defensive end Da’Quan Bowers is one of 13 ACC players on the preseason Watch List for the Lombardi Award. Bowers is a junior who has been a key to Clemson’s outstanding defensive rankings the last two years.
Eligibility for the Rotary Lombardi Award is limited to down linemen, end-to-end, either on offense or defense, who set up no farther than 10 yards to the left or right of the ball, or linebackers who set up no farther than five yards deep from the line of scrimmage. The winner will be announced in Houston, TX in December.
Bowers is one of just four down linemen from the ACC to be listed on the Watch List. The others are Marvin Austin of North Carolina, Allen Bailey of Miami (FL), and Robert Quinn of North Carolina.
Bowers had 58 tackles in 12 games last year to rank second on the team in tackles among down linemen. He added 11 tackles for loss to tie for second on the team in that area. He was a big reason Clemson ranked in the top 25 in the nation in scoring defense and total defense. For his career, the junior has 105 tackles in 25 games.
Earlier this summer, Bowers was named to the Bronko Nagurski Award preseason watch list, joining teammates DeAndre McDaniel and Jarvis Jenkins. That award goes to the national defensive player of the year.
Clemson has had one finalist for the Lombardi Award in its history. That was William Perry, who was a finalist in 1984 when he led the nation in tackles for loss with 27.
