Men’s Golf Finish Second at Cuscowilla Intercollegiate

March 24, 1998

EATONTON, GA–Defending NCAA Champion Charles Warren tied his career best round with a 66 on Tuesday, leading the Tigers to a second place finish at the Cuscowilla Intercollegiate at Eatonton, GA. The 54-hole tournament featured 12 teams from around the nation.

Warren finished in a tie for second individually with Bryce Molder of Georgia Tech, with a 208 tournament score thanks to rounds of 74-68-66.

The 66 was Warren’s lowest score since his freshman season (1994-95) when he had a 66 at the Wofford Intercollegiate. It was just the second time in his career that Warren had posted two rounds in the 60s in the same tournament, the first-time in a 54-hole event. He had a pair of rounds in the 60s when he won the NCAA tournament last Spring, a 72-hole event.

The individual champion on the par 70, 6718-yard layout was North Carolina’s Ross Bain, who had a 205 total, including a 65 on Tuesday. He led the Tar Heels to the team championship.

North Carolina had an 841 team total, six strokes better than Clemson’s 847 figure. The Tar Heels shot a 273 as a team on Tuesday, seven shots better than Clemson’s 280, which was the second best team round of the day.

Georgia Tech, the host school, was third with a 854 figure, while Duke was fourth at 861. NC State finished fifth at 863, giving the ACC the top five team scores. LSU was sixth at 872. East Tennessee State and Wake Forest were tied for seventh at 873.

Clemson had two of the top five finishers in the tournament. Jonathan Byrd, who has been Clemson’s top stroke average player this spring, had a 71 on Tuesday and finished at even par 210. It was the third time in the last four tournaments that Byrd, like Warren a native of Columbia, had finished a tournament at even par or better.

Freshman Lucas Glover, who ranked second heading into the final round, had a 77 on Tuesday and finished tied for 15th at 215. Classmate John Engler, a native of Augusta, GA, had a 70 on Tuesday and finished at 220, good enough for 33rd. Joey Maxon had another consistent tournament and had a 73 on Tuesday, 222 total for the three days.

Clemson will next be in action at the Carpet Capital Classic in Dalton, GA April 3-5.
