CLEMSON, SC – The Clemson women’s tennis team was ranked 12th in the latest Campbell/ITA Tennis poll to extend its streak of weeks in the top 25 to 19 straight. The Tigers (17-7) have been ranked among the nation’s top 15 teams in every poll this season, ranking as high as number nine on Mar. 3. Five Clemson players were also listed individually in singles and doubles with Ani Mijacika’s number-three ranking headlining the group.
The junior from Makarska, Croatia has been ranked third in two straight polls following a six-week stint at the top spot. She boasts a 28-8 record this year with 17 wins over ranked opponents. Fellow Croatian Josipa Bek was ranked 15th in Tuesday’s poll as Clemson is only team in the nation that boasts two players ranked in the top 15. Bek has won 10 of her last 11 matches and owns a 30-8 record for the fall and spring seasons combined.
Rookie Estefania Balda, who did not play in the conference tournament due to an injury, was ranked at #111.
Wong has teamed with Mijacika for a 14-5 doubles record this year and the duo has remained in the top 10 since debuting in the polls at #10 on Feb. 19. They have won eight matches over ranked teams and compiled a 7-2 record against ACC opponents. The pair was ranked seventh in Tuesday’s poll.
Clemson’s number-two doubles team of Ina Hadziselimovic fell seven spots to #34 after falling to North Carolina last Friday. The tandem still boasts a 13-6 record since partnering in February.
The Tigers are on a three-week break until the 2009 NCAA Tournament begins on May 8. With their national ranking, they should receive a bid when draws are announced on Tuesday, Apr. 28. ESPNews will broadcast the selection show at approximately 5:20 pm. Clemson will hope to play host to its sixth straight regional as the top 16 teams typically earn the right to hold first and second round matches.
