TALLAHASSEE, Fla.- The Seminole soccer team (4-3) opened their ACC campaign Sunday and dropped their first home match of the season to the fifth-ranked Clemson Tigers (6-0) 3-2. FSU made two come-from-behind bids before allowing freshman Lindsay Brown to score the game-winner with less than two minutes remaining in the match.
“This was a great game today,” said head coach Patrick Baker. “This is why you want to coach in the ACC and if you’re a player, you want to play in the ACC for games like this. We’ve started to overcome some of the barriers that this program faces but you just have to give credit to Clemson today.”
The Seminoles once again proved they can fight back after falling behind Sunday. Clemson opened the scoring just over 10 minutes into the game but sophomore Cindy Schofield notched her second goal in two games to even the match 1-1. The Seminoles went into half-time trailing the Tigers 2-1 after sophomore Heather Beem gave Clemson the lead in the 38th minute.
FSU came out of the half and took only 3:37 to even the game at 2-2. Senior Rachael Watkin knocked in her second goal of the weekend and pulled the Seminoles back into the game. The score remained tied until the 88th minute of the game. Clemson sophomore Deliah Arrington fired a shot that rebounded to Brown who buried the eventual game-winner.
“They scored and we came back,” said Baker. “They scored and we came back again. We just didn’t have enough in the tank at the end. They got one with two minutes left. Although we are showing that this team is never out of it, I wish we could play with the lead more often like we did against Texas A&M Friday.”
The Seminoles had one last chance to send the match to overtime when freshman Amber Tollefson just missed putting away a header at the left post. As the shot sailed just wide, the whistle blew before Clemson had to put the ball back into play.
“We are still learning how to win,” said Baker. “We have five freshmen starting for us and it’s a young team. They are still learning as far as understanding what it’s going to take to win at the Division I level on a consistent basis. I think they learned a little bit today about what it takes to win a game in the ACC.”
