CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The second-seeded University of North Carolina women’s soccer team exploded for three goals in a span of less than eight minutes midway through Saturday afternoon’s NCAA quarterfinal game with Clemson to record a 3-0 victory over the Tigers before 2,925 fans at Fetzer Field. The win, Carolina’s 16th in a row, sends the Tar Heels to the NCAA semifinals for the 18th successive year. UNC has now made it to at least the semifinal round of all 18 NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournaments, beginning in 1982.
Three different Tar Heel underclassmen recorded goals for North Carolina as UNC improved to 22-2-0 on the campaign. Clemson saw its season end with a record of 14-7-2. This was Clemson’s second trip to the Elite 8 in the past three years.
It appeared that the two teams would go to halftime with the score tied at 0-0 until the Tar Heels exploded for two goals in the last two minutes of the first half. The first goal came at 43:02 as Carolina called a set play on a free kick and executed it to perfection. Senior defender Lorrie Fair pushed the ball to junior midfielder Raven McDonald on the right flank. McDonald’s cross to the middle of the penalty box was perfectly placed for sophomore midfielder Jena Kluegel, who drove the ball past Clemson goalkeeper Katie Carson.
Just 1:08 later, UNC extended the lead to 2-0 as junior forward Meredith Florance finished off another picture perfect goal for the Tar Heels. Kluegel served a ball from the left flank that freshman forward Kim Patrick flicked on to Florance. Florance’s shot from eight yards dead center almost ripped a hole in the back of the net.
Carolina came out strong in the second half and sophomore forward Anne Remy finished out the scoring at the 50:37 mark. Freshman defender Leslie Gaston gathered the ball at midfield and advanced it to McDonald who pushed it on to Remy. Remy dribbled through a pair of defenders and then poked the ball to the left of Carson and into the goal.
The win was Carolina’s third this season over the Tigers, who were seeded seventh in the NCAA Tournament bracket of 48. Carolina will now take on sixth-seeded Penn State next Friday in the NCAA Women’s College Cup semifinals at San Jose State University’s Spartan Stadium in San Jose, Calif. The Nittany Lions earned their first ever semifinal berth earlier today by beating Hartford 2-0 in an NCAA quarterfinal game at State College, Pa.
