Women’s Soccer Downed 2-0 by Tennessee

Rhian Wilkinson assisted on both goals in Tennessee’s 2-0 win over Clemson in the championship game of the Clemson Invitational at Clemson, SC Sunday night.

With the win, Tennessee improves its record to 5-1 overall, while Clemson falls to 4-3 this season. Clemson is ranked 18th by the NSCAA (National Soccer Coaches Association of America), and 12th by Soccer America. The Lady Tigers are ranked 17th by the Soccertimes.com poll. Tennessee is ranked 16th by Soccer America.

Wilkinson was named the Tournament’s offensive MVP while Allison Mitchell was named the Tournament’s defensive MVP. Other members of the team included: Ellen Dean, Tennessee; Keeley Dowling, Tennessee; Kayla Lockaby, Tennessee, Wilkinson, Tennessee; Deliah Arrington, Clemson; Heather Beem, Clemson; Mitchell, Clemson; Amy Morrison, Butler; Rachel Pivarnik, Butler; Natasha Moore, Western Carolina; Kelly Barker, Western Carolina.

The Western Carolina-Butler match was cancelled due to wet conditions early this afternoon. After a three hour and 45 minute weather delay, Clemson and Tennessee started the match at 6:15 p.m.

Tennessee scored early in the first half at the 4:07 mark. Kayla Lockaby scored her fifth goal of the season with an assist by Wilkinson. Patrick also scored her fifth goal of the season at the 85:41 point in the game with the assist by Wilkinson.

“I was disappointed in the way we played,” said Clemson Head Coach Todd Bramble. The field conditions made it unpredictable. Before the game I knew we would have to work hard and fight hard in these conditions. It really went against our style, but you must be able to play in sloppy conditions. I think it suited Tennessee’s style better. To win these type games, we must improve in our competing and aggressiveness. Tennessee did a great job sticking their chances away. We really missed Sarah Turner in the defense today, but she will be back for the Florida State match on Friday.”

Clemson will play at Florida State on Friday, September 20 in the first ACC match of the season for the Lady Tigers.
