Waller?s Weight Throw Record at Virginia Tech Highlights Friday Action

CLEMSON, SC – Brittney Waller shattered her own school record in the 20-pound weight throw Friday to highlight a full day of action at two different meets for Clemson track & field.  Waller won the weight throw at Virginia Tech with the second-best mark in the country, while Dezerea Bryant swept both short sprints Friday at the Tiger Paw Invitational at Clemson’s home facility. Waller fouled on four of her six throws, but of her two legal marks, one exploded for a mark of 73’2”.  Her previous best of 69’9” set last week at the Armory Collegiate Invitational was the Clemson standard for the event.  Waller ascended to No. 2 on the national performance list with her effort at Rector Field House, the same facility that will host the ACC Indoor Championships in two weeks. In Clemson, Bryant first collected a win in the 60-meter dash.  She turned in a time of 7.24 in the final, holding off a Charlotte sprinter and teammate Stormy Kendrick, who ran 7.39.  Senior leader Jasmine Edgerson pulled up in the 60 prelims and did not compete the rest of the afternoon due to a quad strain.  Bryant followed with a fast time in the 200 as well, running 23.64 on Clemson’s flat 200-meter track.  Kendrick was third in that race as well (24.32). Tevin Hester clocked a time of 6.71 in the men’s 60 dash to take the runner-up spot.  He followed with an individual victory in the 200, posting a time of 21.68 to cruise to the win. Brianna Blanton won the invitational 800 meters with a personal best.  The sophomore from Summerville, SC was the best in a field of 21 runners with a time of 2:10.70.  The time is fifth-best in Clemson’s indoor annals.  Blanton is slated for the mile on Saturday.  Aaron Ramirez followed with another Tiger victory for the men’s 800, clocking a time of 1:52.47 in the opening section. Marcus Maxey had a consistent afternoon in the 60 hurdles.  The senior from Athens, GA posted a personal best in the final, clocking a 7.80 in a third-place finish.  His time ranks seventh in school history. Also in Blacksburg, Mimi Land was impressive in the long jump.  The freshman out of Albany, GA hit a mark of 19’5.25” and finished in third place.  Caroline Bond took second place in the unseeded section of the pole vault.  The sophomore tied a personal best after clearing the bar at 12’7.5”.  Lauren Terstappen and Christy Gasparino are slated for the seeded section in the vault on Saturday. The Tigers return to action on Saturday at both meets, while the women’s 4×400 relay will compete at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, AR.
