CLEMSON, S.C. – Duke and Wake Forest played to a 1-1 overtime tie with Wake Forest advancing on penalty kicks in the first quarterfinal game of the 15th annual Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Soccer Championship at Riggs Field in Clemson, S.C.
Duke struck first with a goal by Demetrio Sanchez at the 72:27 mark with an assist by Trevor Perea. Perea played a ball to Sanchez in the middle of the field. Sanchez sent a shot from 12 yards out to the center of the goal.
The Demon Deacons evened the score at the 77:02 mark in the game with a goal from junior Aaron Thomas. Thomas scored his second goal of the year with assists by Vicente Bastidas and Bobby Gehring. Bastidas crossed the ball to Gehring who flicked the ball to Thomas. Thomas’ shot went into the left center of the goal from six yards out.
At the end of the two overtime periods, the score was still tied 1-1 with Wake Forest advancing after penalty kicks. The Deacons advance with a 13-4-2 record and will face No. 1 seeded Virginia on Friday at 5:30 p.m. The Blue Devils are now 8-10-1 on the year.
