Volleyball Defeats Georgia Tech, 3-0

CLEMSON, SC – The Clemson volleyball team, ranked 14th nationally, rallied from an 8-4 deficit in game three to defeat Georgia Tech 3-0 (15-3, 15-1, 17-15) Tuesday night at Jervey Gym. The Tigers took games one and two easily before the Yellow Jackets forced a close game three.

Georgia Tech jumped out to an 8-4 lead in the final game, before Clemson rallied back to lead 9-8. The Yellow Jackets scored three straight points, then the Tigers tied the game at 11 points apiece. From that point each team would take a one point lead then the other team would tie the match. With the score tied at 14 points, Georgia Tech scored after five sideouts for a 15-14 lead. After seven consecutive sideouts, Clemson’s Heidi Cooper served to tie the game at 15 points. The Tigers went on to win the next two points and the match.

Sophomore Jodi Steffes led the Tigers with a .647 attack percentage, tallying 12 kills, one error and 17 attempts. Senior Emily Gorla recorded a match-high 14 kills, with two errors and 27 attempts for a .444 hitting percentage. Senior Cindy Stern hit .440 for the evening, with 13 kills, two errors and 25 attempts, while senior Alison Coday recorded 12 kills and six errors off 36 attempts.

Freshman setter Jessi Betcher recorded 42 assists to lead Clemson, while Steffes led the team with 14 digs. Freshman Mallory Benson and Coday each recorded three block assists to pace the Tigers.

Clemson (24-1, 12-1 ACC) will play at Florida State Friday at 7 p.m. Georgia Tech drops to 15-11, 5-8 ACC with the loss.
