Virginia Commonwealth defeats Clemson 3-1 in NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament

CHAPEL HILL, NC–Virginia Commonwealth defeated Clemson 3-1 in the first round of the NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament at Chapel Hill, NC Friday night.

With the win, VCU improves to 13-4-5 overall, while the Lady Tigers fall to 9-9-2 to end the season.

The Rams scored with 11:22 gone in the match. Sandra Anger scored on an unassisted goal for her fifth goal of the season.

Stephanie Power scored on a 20-yard shot at the 21:33 mark for her ninth goal of the year.

Leigh Anthony scored her second goal of the season at the 56:11 mark. Megan Flanagan and Shelley Lyle were credited with the assists.

Clemson’s Britten Meyer scored on a 40-yard shot that she lofted a shot over the Rams’ goalkeeper Lauren Hardison and into the net at the 71:14 point in the match. It was Meyer’s third goal of the season.

Clemson outshot the Rams 17-12. VCU’s goalkeeper Lauren Hardison finished the match with nine saves.

Clemson first started women’s soccer in the 1994 season. Since that time the Lady Tigers have been to the NCAA Tournament for 12 consecutive years.
