Vickery Hall Announces Student-Athletes of the Week for the Week of April 21

Junior sprinter Travis Padgett and the entire Clemson women’s tennis team were named Vickery Hall’s Student-Athletes of the Week for the week of April 21, 2008.

Favorite Professor: Michael Godfrey   Athletic Highlight: It took nearly three and a half hours, but Carol Salge finally clinched the match for Clemson to give the Tigers their first ACC Women’s Tennis Championship crown since 2004. The fourth-seeded Tigers upended top-seeded Georgia Tech in the semifinals and posted their second upset of the tournament with a 4-3 victory over #2-seed Duke in the finals. The win extended Clemson’s streak to 10 straight. Salge, a senior, was named the ACC’s Most Valuable Player of the tournament. The Tigers’ run to the title included three straight wins over top-15 ranked teams. By winning the conference title, Clemson secured the ACC’s automatic bid for the 2008 NCAA Championships.

Athletic Highlight: Padgett became the first man in the history of the Atlantic Coast Conference to win the 100m dash event three times, and did so in an ACC meet record 10.17 seconds. The junior sprinter posted a second-place finish in the 200m dash with a time of 20.83. Padgett also anchored the Tigers’ winning 4x100m relay team that won the event, recording a time of 39.40. Clemson finished second as a team at the ACC Championships, with a final point total of 124.
