Valdes Leads Clemson at Cougar Classic

Clemson, S.C.—Freshman Ana Paula Valdes shot an even par 72 to lead Clemson to a 293 team score and a 14th place standing at the Cougar Classic at Yeamans Hall Golf Club in Hanahan, S.C.  The 21- team national field includes six ACC teams, five Big 10 teams and four ACC teams.

Valdes played consistently as she made 14 pars, two bogeys and two birdies in recording the second even par round of her young career.  She is in a tie for 30th place after the first round.

Sophomore Alice Hewson and junior Sydney Legacy both had rounds of one over par 73.  Legacy played the last eight holes at two-under-par and Hewson shot a one-under-par 35 on the back nine.  She had two birdies and three bogeys for her round.

Junior Marisa Messana had a round of 75 and senior Sloan Shanahan shot an 81.

Furman is in first place after shooting a team round of 10-under-par 278, the lowest team round in Furman history. North Carolina is second at 281 and Wake Forest is third at 282.  Auburn and Central Florida round out the top five with a tie for fourth at 284.

The 54-hole, three-day event continues on Monday.
