Two Clemson Golfers in United States Amateur

Aug. 21, 2010

CLEMSON, SC – Current Clemson golfers Jacob Burger and David Dannelly will compete in the United States Amateur in University Place, WA next week. The tournament begins Monday with 36 holes of stroke play. The top 64 players after the 36 holes will then advance to Match play. The match play tournament will run through Sunday, August 29.

Each of 312 players will play 18 holes of stroke play at the par 71 Chambers Bay Golf Club in University Place, WA and 18 holes at the par 72 Home Course in Dupont, WA on Monday and Tuesday. The match play portion of the tournament will begin on Wednesday and will be played at Chambers Bay. It will be the first USGA Tournament played at Chambers Bay, which at 7,742 yards is the longest course in the history of the United States Amateur. It will also be the site of the 2015 United States Open.

Burger will begin his play at the Home Course on Monday at 7:55 AM, while Dannelly begins Monday at the same facility at 1:00 PM. Both players qualified for the United States Amateur through a sectional qualifier at the Colleton River Course near Hilton Head, SC. Dannelly finished first at that 36-hole event with a 142 score, while Burger was third at 144.

Burger is a junior on the Clemson team. He was third on the Tigers 16th-ranked team in stroke average with a 72.88 score. As a sophomore in 2009-10, Burger had six consecutive top 20 finishes in the spring, the only member of the Tigers to do that last year. He had an eighth place finish at Furman.

Dannelly, also a junior, is in his first year at Clemson after spending two seasons at Coastal Carolina. The native of Easley, SC won the Big South Tournament championship as a freshman in 2008.

Last year, two Clemson golfers reached the Elite Eight of the United States Amateur. Ben Martin finished runner-up and qualified for the 2010 Masters and United States Open. Phillip Mollica reached the final eight last year after winning three matches.

Chris Patton is the only Clemson golfer to win the United States Amateur. He won the event with a 3 & 1 win over Danny Green of Jackson, TN in 1989 at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, PA.
