Trio of Tigers Honored by U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association

March 7, 2011

CLEMSON, SC – Lawrence Johnson was voted Women’s Coach-of-the-Year for the Southeast Region by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), the organization announced Monday. In addition, Miller Moss and April Sinkler were voted the men’s and women’s indoor Field Athletes-of-the-Year, respectively.

Johnson earned the honor for the second straight season after guiding the Tiger women’s team to its second consecutive ACC indoor championship. Clemson won in dominant fashion, with a 51.5-point advantage over runner-up Florida State. Johnson’s team produced four individual ACC champions as well as the 4×400 meter relay. His team is currently No. 9 in the USTFCCCA computer ratings heading into this week’s NCAA Indoor Championships in College Station, TX.

Moss is the nation’s leader in the heptathlon heading into the indoor meet this weekend. He scored 5,903 points – a Clemson record – en route to winning at the JRF Combined Events Invitational in January. He then scored 5,881 – an ACC meet record – and captured his first individual ACC championship last weekend in Blacksburg, VA. Moss also helped Clemson’s 4×400 meter relay to an ACC title as well.

Sinkler earned the honor for a third straight time. Last season, she swept the indoor and outdoor Field Athlete-of-the-Year recognition. This season, she was ACC runner-up in both the high jump and long jump and also third in the triple jump. She hit an automatic qualifying mark in the long jump (21’1.5″) and is also strong in the national ranks in the triple jump (42’11.75″). Sinkler now owns nine All-ACC accolades in her decorated career.
