Tigers Post 4-3 Upset of #6 Georgia Tech Saturday Afternoon

CLEMSON, SC – The Tiger women’s tennis team clinched the doubles point for the eight straight match and three players posted upsets in singles play as #13 Clemson upset sixth-ranked Georgia Tech, 4-3, at the Clemson Indoor Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers improved to 9-2 on the year while the Yellow Jackets dropped to 8-3 overall.

Ani Mijacika and Federica van Adrichem recorded their fourth straight victory at the top doubles position, defeating 18th-ranked Kristi Miller and Whitney McCray, 8-6, for their third upset-victory. The duo, ranked #55 in the ITA doubles poll, now boasts a 7-2 record. Georgia Tech claimed the number two doubles match-up as Alison Silverio and Amanda Craddock won by an 8-3 margin over Carol Salge and Estefania Balda.

The Tigers’ 32nd-ranked team of Maria Brito and Alexandra Luc then clinched the point for Clemson, eking out a 9-7 victory against Kirsten Flower and Tarryn Rudman at flight three.

Mijacika recorded her second upset of the day with a 6-1, 7-5 win over #27 Christy Striplin at the number two singles position. Balda also posted an upset in singles action, defeating 41st-ranked Silverio in a three-set battle at flight three (6-3, 3-6, 6-3). Van Adrichem then secured the victory for the Tigers as she won the second and third sets over 41st-ranked Craddock at the number four spot after falling in the first set.

In other singles action, Salge suffered a 6-2, 6-1 loss to 10th-ranked Miller at flight one, while #82 Rudman won a three-set match over the Tigers’ Ina Hadziselimovic, 7-6(6), 2-6, 10-8, at the number five position. Brito then fell to Amanda McDowell at the flight six spot, 6-1, 6-1.

Clemson will head north next weekend to take on Boston College and Maryland. The Tigers and Eagles will meet Friday night, while Clemson will face the Terps on Sunday afternoon.
