Tigers And Hurricanes Set For Top 10 Women’s Tennis Match-Up

March 7, 2009

CLEMSON, SC – The ninth-ranked Clemson women’s tennis team will play host to #6 Miami on Sunday afternoon in a top-10 conference battle. The Tigers (8-4, 1-0 ACC) and Hurricanes (11-2, 1-0 ACC) are scheduled to take to the court at 12:00 pm at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center.

Fans can follow the action on the Internet by accessing the livestats link on the Clemson Athletic homepage.

In Clemson’s last action, the short-handed Tigers fell to Kentucky on the road by a 4-3 margin last Sunday, but Clemson posted an upset of Georgia Tech to open the conference season the previous week. Tiger junior Ani Mijacika, the nation’s top singles player, will look to return to action after missing the past three matches with an injury. She boasts a 20-4 overall record with eight wins during the spring season. Fellow Croatian Josipa Bek earned the #4 national ranking in Tuesday’s poll to give Head Coach Nancy Harris a potent one-two punch at the top of the lineup.

Miami has won its last three matches while its only two losses were against teams then-ranked in the top five in the Campbell/ITA Tennis poll. Julia Cohen leads the Hurricanes with the #13 national singles ranking and a 16-4 overall singles record.

The Tigers trail Miami in the series score, 19-4, and fell to the Hurricanes last season in Coral Gables (5-2). Clemson’s last victory over Miami was during the 2000 season.
