CLEMSON, SC – Clemson women’s tennis player Josipa Bek has been named the 2009 ITA Southeast Region Player-to-Watch. The freshman from Osijek, Croatia quickly burst onto the national scene by winning the WIlson/ITA Southeast Regional Championship in October. She defeated four ranked players in her run to the title and then knocked off 12th-ranked Melanie Gloria of Fresno State in the first round of the ITA Intercollegiate National Indoor Championships.
Bek has compiled a 21-5 record during the dual season with six wins over players then-ranked in the top 40. Overall, she boasts 32 wins for the year and is only the fourth different Tiger women’s tennis player in the last 13 years to reach the 30-win mark. Bek is just the second Clemson player all-time to earn the honor, joining two-time winner, and arguably the greatest player in school history, Julie Coin. Coin received the award as a sophomore in 2003 and a junior in 2004.
The ITA Player-to-Watch Award goes to a player who has an outstanding season and is expected to perform at a high level the rest of his or her career. However, she must have not yet reached the finals of a major collegiate tournament.
