CLEMSON, SC – The Tiger volleyball team will be one of several Clemson programs in action this weekend as it plays host to its spring tournament. Georgia and the College of Charleston will be in town for the three-match event to be held at Jervey Gym. Fans can catch the Tigers free of charge as they take on the Bulldogs at 10:00 am and face the Cougars at 4:00 pm.
Georgia and the College of Charleston will battle at 1:00 pm.
The tournament is Clemson’s only home contest for the 2009 spring season. In March, the Tigers earned a second place finish at the College of Charleston Spring Tournament. Clemson had a 3-1 record in first round of pool play to earn a top seed for the playoffs held later that afternoon. The Tigers then defeated the host-Cougars in the semifinals before falling to North Carolina in the championship match.
The Clemson roster boasts 10 players, including five starters from the 2008 squad that posted a 23-9 record and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Juniors Lia Proctor earned first-team All-ACC accolades in 2008 and have been three-year starters at the setter and outside hitter positions, respectively. Didem Ege is also an all-conference junior who has been the team’s libero for the past three years. Cansu Ozdemir, a sophomore from Istanbul, Turkey, and freshman Brittany Fennell will also be back on the court this spring.
Three other players who earned their first letters last fall – Lacy Hayes, Lisa Jedlicka and Katie Sharpe – will also return. Head Coach Jolene Jordan Hoover will gain the services of freshman hitter Brooke Kohler, who was injured for the 2008 season, and Jessica Williams, a right-side hitter who sat out last fall after transferring from NC State.
