San Diego, CA – The Clemson rowing team wrapped up the weekend at the San Diego Crew Classic on Sunday morning. The Tigers competed in three petite finals, highlighted by the varsity 8+ boat winning the Jessop-Whittier Cup petite final and the second varsity 8+ claiming first place in a tie with Miami.
Clemson’s varsity 8+, ranked 12th in the nation last week in the U.S. Rowing/CRCA poll, posted a time of 6:57.89 and rowed away from the field. The Tigers finished ahead of Purdue, San Diego State, Loyola, and Miami. The crew consisted of Abbey Fernandez (coxswain), Lizzy Jennings, Suzanne Van Fleet, Brittany Cummings, Lindsay Sheppard, Jessica Leidecker, and Kristen Weinacker.
The Tigers were credited as co-first place finishers in the second varsity 8+ petite final with Miami. The Hurricanes actually steered into Clemson’s lane and progress was somewhat impeded, creating the co-first place ending after much debate. Clemson’s second varsity 8+ had a time of 7:14.6.
The novice 8+ placed third in their petite final, finishing behind UC Davis and Southern Cal. The Tigers held off San Diego State, UC San Diego, and Santa Clara. The Tigers’ crew consisted of Meredith Razzolini (coxswain), Olivia Shomaker, Erika Fadden, Jacqueline Spoon, Jenn Agee, Meredith Myers, Amanda Chivers, and Mairi Trimboli. The boat had a time of 7:23.64.
