Tiger Golfers Tied for 12th After Two Rounds at Augusta State Invitational

March 31, 2007

Evans, GA – The Clemson golf team stands tied for 12th after two rounds at the Administaff Augusta State Invitational. The Tigers have a two-round total of 589 (13-over par) at the Champions Retreat Golf Club. Kyle Stanley is tied for eighth in the individual standings with a two-day total of 141, three-under par.

North Carolina leads the tournament standings at 16-under par. The Tar Heels had a team score of 281 on Saturday, and now have a nine-shot lead over Coastal Carolina heading into the final day. Clemson is just five strokes out of sixth place.

Stanley got his day off to an outstanding start by firing a 33 on the back nine, which is actually the side the Tiger team started on Saturday. His 33 included four birdies. After a pair of bogeys to begin the front nine, he recovered with two more birdies, including the final hole (9th hole). He has posted rounds of 71 and 70 for his three-under par score.

Ben Martin was the Tigers’ #2 scorer on Saturday, as he posted a one-over total of 73. He did not card a birdie on the opening nine holes, but collected three on the front side to finish strong. Like Stanley, he also birdied his final hole Saturday. Martin is at three-over par for the tournament and is tied for 39th in the standings.

Phillip Mollica recovered from three bogeys on the back side and shot a 75 for the second round. The Anderson, SC native birdied two of the final five holes, including the par five ninth hole. He has posted back-to-back scores of 75.

David May was the Tigers’ final contributor on Saturday, as he carded a four-over total of 76. He had an adventurous round with three birdies, three bogeys, and a pair of double bogeys. The New York native suffered the two double bogeys in a three-hole stretch on the front nine, thus taking him out of contention for what once looked to be one the top rounds of the day for the Tigers.

The tournament will conclude with the final 18 holes Sunday.
