Jack Ferguson, Matt Hendrix and Gregg Jones are all ranked in the top 25 of the latest Golfweek/Titleist men’s amateur rankings. Clemson is the only school in the nation with three players returning for 2003-04 ranked in the top 25. All three were starters on Clemson’s National Championship team of this past season.
Ferguson, who grew up in Seneca, is currently ranked 11th with 120 points, tied with Camilo Villegas of Columbia, a member of Florida’s golf team. Hendrix, a native of Aiken, SC, made the biggest move in the nation last week when he won the Sunnehanna Amateur in Johnstown, PA, a victory that jumped him from 56th to 13th in the rankings. Gregg Jones finished third at the Sunnehanna and moved from 43rd to 25th.
All three have a chance to move up the rankings this weekend as they are all participating in the Monroe Amateur in New York. They also will soon jump up in the standings when Ricky Barnes of Stockton, CA and the University of Arizona, and Hunter Mahan of McKinney, TX and Oklahoma State, turn professional within the next six weeks. Barnes is currently ranked number-one, while Mahan is third. Bill Haas of Greer, SC and the Wake Forest golf team, is currently second.
In addition to Ferguson, Hendrix and Jones, Clemson sophomore Martin Catalioto also will be playing at the Monroe Amateur this weekend. Current Clemson team members Brian Duncan, Stephen Poole and Nick Biershenk will be playing at Green Valley Country Club in Greenville this week at the South Carolina Match Play Championship. Biershenk is the defending champion.
