Team Clemson Fires 18 Under at Wyndham Championship

Aug. 19, 2010

CLEMSON, SC – Team Clemson had an 18-under-par score on Thursday at the first round of the Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, NC. No, there is not a team concept to a PGA Tour event, but if there was Clemson would be in great shape for the second round.

Seven former Tigers are competing in the final PGA event of the FedX Cup season and the seven players combined to shoot 18 under par. All seven former Tigers shot even par or better in the first day on the par 70 course. It marks the first time that seven former Clemson golfers have played in the same PGA Tour event.

Lucas Glover was the low Tiger with a six under par 64. The 2009 United States Open Champion, who made the cut in three of the four Majors this year, birdied three of his last four holes and missed a 10-foot birdie putt on the final hole, or he would have been four-under for that closing stretch.

Jonathan Byrd, an All-American at Clemson between 1997-2000, had seven birdies in shooting a 66 on Thursday, while Charles Warren had a three under par 67. Warren was inducted into the Clemson Ring of Honor last fall.

Former Clemson All-American Kevin Johnson had a 68 on Thursday, as did former All-American Brian Duncan. Duncan started three over par for his first four holes, then shot five-under over his last 13. D.J. Trahan, who will be inducted into the Clemson Hall of Fame in two weeks, had a 69, and Brent Delahoussaye added a 70.

All seven players will be in action again on Friday.
