The Clemson men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will travel to Chapel Hill, NC from Nov. 15-17 to take part in the Nike Cup meet. The Tigers will compete against UNC, Syracuse, Kentucky, East Carolina, Virginia Tech, Gardner-Webb, Yale, and Kansas. The events take place all day at Koury Natatorium.
Both the men’s and women’s teams finished third in the event last season. The men’s team won the Nike Cup during the 2005-06 season. The men’s team has opened the 2007-08 season with the best start under coach Ip and one of the best in school history. Right now, they sit at 6-1 (3-1 ACC). The women’s are off to a 2-5 (1-3 ACC) start, with three losses to ranked opponents.
The women have put up some impressive time so far this season, led by Rachel Regone’s 23.13 in the 50 free. She is undefeated in the event this season and has improved each meet. Michelle Parkhurst has also been solid for the Tigers in the backstroke events, while Katrina Obas has been consistently placing in the top three in breast events.
The men’s team is led by seniors Mark Vahle, Matt Balderston, Attila Ruszka, Adam Farnham, Tom Recko, and Dan Mengering, all of who have been impressive so far this season. The men’s team has had contributions all the way up and down the roster, and this depth will help them going into this event.
The Nike Cup can be followed on tarheelblue.com, which will have real-time updates. Daily results can also be found at clemsontigers.com. Following the Nike Cup, the Tigers will be off until a January 2nd meet with Florida Atlantic.
