Head Swimming and Diving Coach Chris Ip announced the addition of Ronald Turner to the staff on Tuesday. Turner will officially begin his tenure with the Tigers on June 11, 2008. Turner, a 2001 graduate of the University of Tennessee, has extensive experience from the YMCA Club level to the National level.
“We are pleased to add Ron to our staff as an Assistant Coach,” Ip said. “He brings a lot of experience from the YMCA and USA Club level all the way up to SEC and Big Ten programs. We feel that he will be a valuable addition to our team as we continue to make strides toward our goals both academically and athletically.”
Said Turner, “I am very happy to be part of the Clemson family. I think Coach Ip and his staff have done a great job of making the program one of the most competitive in the ACC. I am excited to make the program the best in the ACC and one of the top in the country in the future.”
As an Assistant Coach, Turner will work primarily with the mid-distance freestyle group. He will also be called upon heavily as a recruiter and will also work with the long list of swimming and diving alumni in support of the Tiger program.
Turner has a long list of accomplishments as a swimming coach. Turner was an assistant women’s swimming coach with Tennessee during his undergraduate studies and the Head Assistant Women’s Swimming Coach at Indiana University, a top-10 NCAA program. He led 18 swimmers to All-America honors, and has coached 12 Olympic qualifiers and finalists.
He is a Level 5 member of the American Swim Coaches Association, given to the top two percent of coaches nationally. He has also coached numerous club and YMCA programs nationally, and was named national YMCA Coach of the Year in 2006.
Additionally, Turner was an Assistant Coach on the 2007 Pan-American Games Team, and a 2007 World Championship Co-Head Coach. He is still on the U.S. National team staff.
