Stetson Defeats Clemson 2-1

Sept. 18, 2007

CLEMSON, SC — Eugen Starikov scored the game-winning goal with 6:19 left to go in regulation in leading Stetson to a 2-1 win over Clemson in a men’s intercollegiate soccer match Tuesday night.

With the win, Stetson improves to 3-2 on the year while Clemson falls to 3-3 this season.

Stetson scored first midway in the first half. Miguel Rodriquez scored from six yards out in front of the goal after assists by Gabe Shibly and Nate Weiss.

Clemson tied the game at the 80:58 mark as Mark Buchholz scored his first goal of the year. Tate Parrish started the play on a corner kick to John Tardy. Tardy sent the ball to Buchholz in the middle who sent the ball into the netting.

Starikov scored the winning goal at the 83:41 mark. Starikov was assisted by Kirk Labusch and Victor Webb.

“I give Stetson all of the credit,” said Clemson Head Coach Trevor Adair. “They didn’t extend themselves. They deserved to win. We struggled to go forward. We took chances and that made us vulnerable for counter attacks.”

Clemson will play host to number-one ranked Wake Forest on Friday evening at 5:00 p.m. in the Tigers’ next action.
