March 26, 2010

Upon returning from Spring Break, SOS had an eventful week, visiting four different schools. Wednesday marked SOS’s monthly visit to Mount Lebanon Elementary to promote literacy. Swimmers Elizabeth Savage and Garrison Stevens read to various classes and discussed the importance of reading and good character.

On Thursday, SOS visited Dacusville Middle School to celebrate Read Across America. Three members of the rowing team, Allison Colberg, Lydia Hassell and Michelle Nance along with Rachel Sparks (swimming and diving) spent time with sixth and seventh graders to read to them and answer questions about school and their sport.

SOS made two appearances on Friday, at Oakway Intermediate School in Westminster, SC and Hunt Meadows Elementary School in Easley, SC. Jeremy Campbell (football) and rowers Victoria Graham, Lydia Hassell and Taylor Hoynacki traveled to Oakway Intermediate for Positive Behavior Incentive Day. Fifty-seven students being honored for their outstanding behavior participated in different activities with the student-athletes, such as tug of war, relay races, face painting, career charades and basketball.

On Friday afternoon, Michelle Nance (rowing), Catalin Baciu (men’s basketball) and Melissa Weaver (rowing) participated in the Hustle Assembly at Hunt Meadows Elementary School. The student-athletes spoke to the children about their sport, wellness and emphasizing the importance of education.
