Seven Former Tigers in Wells Fargo Championships

May 4, 2011

CLEMSON, SC – Seven former Clemson golfers will play in the Wells Fargo Championships at Quail Hollow Golf Club in Charlotte this weekend. The event begins on Thursday and runs through Sunday.

This will tie a record for the most former Clemson golfers in the same PGA Tour event. There were also seven former Tigers at last year’s PGA Tour event in Greensboro, the Wyndham, and the 2011 Heritage Classic in Hilton Head, SC just two weeks ago.

The field includes Ben Martin, Kyle Stanley and Sam Saunders, all of whom were starters on Clemson’s 2008 team that finished fifth in the nation at the NCAA Championships. Martin and Stanley are exempt rookies on the PGA Tour this year.

Also in the field are PGA Tour veterans Jonathan Byrd, Lucas Glover, D.J. Trahan and Charles Warren. Byrd is 19th on the PGA Tour money list this year with $1,404,148. He won the first tournament of the year, the Hyundai Tournament of Champions in Maui. That was his fifth tournament victory, the only active American born player 33 years old or younger with five PGA Tour wins.

The seven players in the field this week have combined to earn $2,254,289 so far this year.
