June 8, 2000

TUCSON, AZ – Freshmen Jarrod Schmidt and Jeff Baker, who have been major contributors to Clemson’s College World Series season, have been named freshman All-Americans by Collegiate Baseball. The magazine announced its Freshmen All-Americans on Thursday, the eve of the College World Series.

Schmidt has a 9-0 record this year and a 3.69 ERA. He earned second-team All-ACC honors this season and has struck out 59 batters. He is tied for the Clemson team lead in victories and his 9-0 record is the most wins by a Tiger pitcher in a perfect season since 1991.

Baker, one of three shortstops named, hit .317 for the Tigers this year with a team best 11 home runs. The home run total is tied for the second most ever by a Clemson freshman. He also has 62 RBIs, tied for the team lead.

Both players will be keys for the Tigers (50-16) as they meet San Jose State in the first round of the College World Series Friday at 3:00 PM eastern.
