Redman Reaches Western Amateur Finals

Redman Reaches Western Amateur Finals

Clemson, S.C.—Doc Redman defeated Cameron Champ of Sacramento, Ca. and Texas A&M 3 & 2 to advance to the finals of the 115th Western Amateur Championship at Skokie Country Club in Skokie, Ill.   Redman will meet Norman Xiong of Canyon Lake, CA and the University of Oregon Saturday afternoon.

Redman is the first Clemson golfer to reach the finals of the Western Amateur.  Kyle Stanley reached the quarterfinals in 2007 for the previous best finish by a Tiger.

Redman and Champ were all square after 12 holes, then Redman won the next three holes to go three up through the 15th hole.  The two players halved the 16th hole to give Redman a 3 & 2 victory.

Redman will face Xiong in the championship match in a battle of 2017 Freshman All-Americans.  Xiong won the Phil Mickelson Award this past year as the top freshman in the nation, while Redman was in the top five for that award as well.  Xiong ranked 16th in the final Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, while Redman was No. 31.

Saturday afternoon’s round will be the eighth round in six days for each competitor.   The Western Amateur format  is the only amateur tournament that requires the two finalists to play eight rounds over five six days.
