Clemson, SC –
Senior utility player Phil Pohl (Cooperstown, NY) was announced as one of 10 finalists for the 2012 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award for baseball on April 25. The finalists were chosen by a media committee from the list of 30 candidates announced in February. Nationwide fan voting begins immediately to determine the winner. Fans are encouraged to vote on the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award website (SeniorClassAward.com) through June 11. Fan votes will be combined with media and Division I men’s head coaches’ votes to determine the winner.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as a senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character, and competition.
Pohl, a two-time team co-captain, is hitting .309 with six homers, nine doubles, a team-high 41 RBIs, and 21 runs in 2012. He also had an 11-game hitting streak from March to April.
In 2011, he was the winner of the Dedication Award for outstanding work in the strength training room and the co-winner of the Tiger Baseball Award, given to the team’s best leader. Then prior to the 2012 season, he was named a strength & conditioning All-American by NSCA.
In the classroom, the management major has a 3.67 career GPA. He was a third-team Academic All-American by CoSIDA in 2011, becoming Clemson’s first Academic All-American since 1995, and was a first-team Academic All-District III pick. He is also a three-time member of the ACC Academic Honor Roll and a two-time All-ACC Academic selection. Pohl, who has made at least a 3.0 GPA in each of his first seven semesters at Clemson, is slated to received his degree in May.
Lowe’s, an official Corporate Partner of the NCAA, will announce the Senior CLASS Award winner during the 2012 College World Series, which will be held from June 16-27 in Omaha, NE.
