American Oguchi Onyewu’s La Louviere crashed out of the Belgian Cup in yesterday’s quarter-final return leg as they travelled to FC Bruges and lost 2-0. The defeat sees the current Cup-holders go out of the tournament 3-2 on aggregate.
Starting and playing the full 90 minutes, the big central defender was unable to alter the fortunes of the day despite being thrown forward as a striker in the last 10 minutes of the game as La Louviere desperately sought to win.
“It was a difficult loss”, noted Onyweu, “especially since we had beaten them 2-1 at home in the first leg. We haven’t lost to Bruges all season, but this is how it goes sometimes. It’s a disappointment to lose, but we’ll get another shot at them next week at home.”
La Louviere host FC Bruges Saturday night in a return to league action, which should see Onyewu return to his normal defensive duties.
