Moss to Compete in Prestigious Thorpe Cup for Team USA

Aug. 4, 2010

CLEMSON, SC – In what has been an outstanding postseason showing by the Clemson track & field program across multiple international competitions, red-shirt junior Miller Moss will be the final Tiger representative to take part in donning the red, white and blue. He will be one of seven decathletes representing Team USA in the 17th Thorpe Cup, a multi-event competition versus decathletes from Germany.

The event will take place Saturday and Sunday in Marburg, Germany. In years past, the event was known as the Visa Cup and the Jeep Challenge. In 2007, the event was named in honor of legendary athletic figure Jim Thorpe, who won an Olympic gold medal in the decathlon in 1912.

The United States has a 13-3 all-time advantage over Germany in the head-to-head team competition and is currently riding a seven-year winning streak in the event. The meet score is an accumulation of the top individual decathlon point totals from each member of the two teams.

Moss had an outstanding red-shirt junior season for the Tigers. He was ACC runner-up indoor in the heptathlon and went on to earn his first All-America honor as a collegian in March after an eighth-place finish at the NCAA indoor national meet. He established a Clemson record with 7,628 points and was again runner-up at the ACC Outdoor Championships. After a disappointing finish at the NCAA Championships due to a tough series in the discus, he rebounded with a fine fourth-place effort at the USA Championships in Des Moines, IA in July.
