Men’s Tennis Sets Out On First Road Trip Against Georgia Tech

Clemson, S.C. — The Clemson men’s tennis team (7-3, 0-1 ACC) faces its first road test of the season as it is set to take on No. 46 Georgia Tech (6-4, 0-1 ACC) on Friday at 2 p.m at Byers Tennis Complex. The Tigers, who moved up five spots to No. 40 in the ITA Rankings this week, looks to notch its first ACC victory of the season. Clemson’s No. 40 ranking is the highest since Feb. 17, 2015, when the Tigers were tied for 35th. It marks the first time the the Yellow Jacket and Tigers will meet while both teams hold ITA rankings since 2011 and the first time since 2007 that Clemson enters the match as the higher-ranked opponent. It will also mark the second time this season that the Tigers will face a ranked opponent in conference play.

Of Note: 

  • It marks the 60th all-time meeting between the Tigers and Yellow Jackets.
  • The first match between Clemson and Georgia Tech was on April 25, 1925. The Yellow Jackets won, 2-4.
  • Clemson lost its first nine matchups with Georgia Tech, but went on to win the next 14 matches between 1967-87, which stands as the series record for most consecutive wins.
  • In its last five contests with the Yellow Jackets, the Tigers have gone 4-1, including 2-0 in away matches. Through its last five away matches with Georgia Tech, Clemson is 3-2.
  • The last time Clemson lost to Georgia Tech in Atlanta was on March 31, 2010. The Yellow Jackets swept that match, 7-0.

In singles, Gabriel Diaz Freire went 2-3, Teodor Giusca went 1-1, Yizhou Liu went 0-1 and Matteo Vialmin went 1-1 against competitors from Georgia Tech. Additionally, Diaz Freire/Liu took the Tigers its lone doubles meeting with the Yellow Jackets in the fall.
