Mamona Finishes Fifth in Triple Jump at U23 European Championships

July 17, 2009

Clemson track & field athlete Patricia Mamona finished fifth in the women’s triple jump at the Under-23 European Championships in Kaunas, Lithuania on Friday. The native of Lisbon, Portugal recorded a personal best jump of 44’11.75″, a fraction of a foot better than her previous best, which came last month in her home country.

Mamona was in eighth position after the third set of jumps, as she put together a solid distance of 44’2.5″. However, on her sixth attempt, the eight-time All-ACC performer moved up three spots in the finishing order with her personal best. She achieved the mark with a legal wind as well.

Mamona, the 2008 Portuguese champion in the triple jump, is coming off a red-shirted outdoor season with the Tigers. She had a successful indoor season, however, as she competed at the NCAA Championships in both the triple jump and pentathlon. Her previous best effort in the triple jump as a collegiate athlete was in 2008 at the NCAA East Region Championships, where she hit a mark of 43’11.25″.

The rising senior has had a decorated three years with the program. She is an eight-time all-conference performer and qualified provisionally for the 2009 NCAA Indoor Championships in an incredible four separate events last winter. Mamona also excels in the classroom for the Tigers. She was named to the All-ACC Indoor Academic Team last month, and most recently was named to the USTFCCCA’s All-Academic Team.
