Major League Tigers Conclude 2013 Season

CLEMSON, SC – The Major League Baseball regular season wrapped up on Monday night, closing the book on 2013 for five former Tigers.

It took 163 games for Jeff Baker and the Texas Rangers to be eliminated from playoff contention. The Rangers fell to the Rays in a tiebreaker game on Monday night, ending the season for Baker and his teammates.

Baker, who just completed his ninth season in the Major Leagues, played 74 games this season and batted .279 with 11 home runs and 21 RBIs. He started the year red hot, batting .364 in April and .379 in May. Baker was primarily used against lefthanders during the year, as he hit .314 with a .667 slugging percentage and 10 home runs against lefties.

Rookie Brad Miller concluded his first season in the Majors with the Seattle Mariners on Sunday. Miller hit .265 in 76 games in 2013 and added eight home runs and 36 RBIs, primarily out of the leadoff spot. He made his Major League debut on June 28. Less than a month later on July 22, Miller was named AL Player-of-the-Week. On the short week following the All-Star break, Miller went 5-for-13 (.385) with two homers, seven RBIs, four runs, and three walks to earn that honor.

His best month came in August, when he batted .288 with three doubles, three triples, three home runs, and 11 RBIs. Miller also recorded three multi-homer games during his rookie campaign. On the next-to-last day of the season, Miller slugged two home runs, including his first career grand slam, with five RBIs.

Former Tiger Chris Dwyer also made his Major League debut in 2013. The lefthander joined the Royals on September 18 and made his debut on September 24. He pitched 2.0 scoreless innings in relief, allowing two hits with two strikeouts against one walk at Seattle. He made another appearance on September 28, pitching a scoreless and hitless inning in relief.

In the National League, Tony Sipp completed his fifth season in the Majors and first with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The lefty reliever compiled a 3-2 record and a 4.78 ERA in 37.2 innings pitched over 56 appearances. In July, he made 11 appearances and recorded a 2.45 ERA, while batters hit just .154 against him.

Tyler Colvin played 27 games for the Colorado Rockies in 2013 in his fifth Major League season. In 75 at-bats, Colvin batted .160 with three home runs and 10 RBIs.
