Lady Tiger Track & Field Heads to Florida

Jan. 24, 2008

Clemson, SC – The women’s track & field team will travel to Gainesville, FL to participate in the 2008 Tom Jones Memorial Classic held at the O’Connell Center on the University of Florida campus. Field events begin at 11:00 AM on Saturday, while track events will start at 2:00 PM. The meet will feature several schools from the SEC, as well as Florida State and Miami from the ACC.

Twenty-two student-athletes from Clemson will be making the trip, including NCAA qualifiers Polly Hardy and Patricia Mamona. The reigning ACC Performer-of-the-Week, Mamona posted an NCAA provisional mark in the triple jump last weekend at the Clemson Invitational. She will compete in the long jump at 12:00 PM, then the triple jump at 4:30 PM.

Hardy leads a group of four participants for the Lady Tigers in the 55m hurdles. She posted an NCAA provisional qualifying mark at Virginia Tech earlier this season in the 60m hurdles. Krystal Barringer, Linda Buchholz, and Liane Weber will also compete in the high hurdles Saturday.

The high jump is scheduled for 12:00 noon on Saturday. April Sinkler, a freshman, is one of the top performers in the event for Clemson. She cleared 5’7″ in her first collegiate action last Saturday, which ranks fifth all-time in school history. Kendra Gauntlett and Anastasia Wilson are also entered in the high jump.

Caroline Kennedy leads a trio in the pole vault, scheduled after the men’s competition at 12:00 PM. The sophomore from Orlando, FL ranks among the top vaulters in the conference and was All-ACC in the event as a freshman.

The running events feature a variety of athletes from Clemson, including six competitors in the 55m dash. Weber, an NCAA participant last season in the pentathlon, returns to action after resting during last week’s Clemson Invitational.

Candice Johnson will run the 800m for the Lady Tigers at 5:45 PM. She is coming off a third-place finish in the event last weekend. Also among Clemson’s featured performers this weekend will be freshman Jenna Baker, who recorded a solid time in winning the 3000m run at the Clemson Invitational. She will be joined by veteran Sunday Ford in the event at 6:50 PM.
