Lady Tiger Swimming & Diving Prepares For NCAA Championships

March 5, 2007

Clemson, SC – As the swimming and diving season winds down, Clemson is just starting to heat up. The Lady Tigers may be hitting their stride at the right time as they have the NCAA Championships starting with the preliminary heats on Thursday morning. Clemson posted a fifth place finish at this year’s ACC Championships, capped off with a gold medal performance in the 200 freestyle relay. The relay smashed the school, UNC pool, and ACC meet record in the event. The fifth place finish was the highest Clemson has finished since the conference was expanded in 2004. Clemson will be sending four swimmers to the NCAA Championship meet in Minneapolis, MN, the most any Lady Tiger team has sent since 2002.

The 200 freestyle relay of senior Kallie Deters, and sophomores Michelle Parkhurst, Rachel Regone, and Lauren Sindall will all take the trip to Minnesota looking for Clemson’s first top 25 national finish since 1992.

The swimmers aren’t the only ones winding their season down, however. Danielle Kazilionis hit the boards this weekend in the Zone B Diving competition for Clemson. She placed 24th on the one-meter board with a score of 230.30, just missing qualifying for the finals by 8.20 points. The top 18 qualify for the finals in each event. Kazilionis, a junior from Portland, ME, also placed 25th on the three-meter board with a six-dive score of 237.75.

The Lady Tigers were also rewarded for their hard work in the classroom over the fall semester. The College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) came out with their academic rankings for the fall semester, and the Lady Tigers were once again near the top. The women’s team compiled an average GPA of 3.38 during the fall, good enough for 14th in the nation. Clemson was also the highest ranked ACC team on the list, ahead of Boston College who was 20th.
