CLEMSON, SC – The Clemson women’s soccer team defeated Wofford 8-0 on Sunday afternoon at Riggs Field. With the win, the 20th-ranked Lady Tigers improve to 7-1 overall, while Wofford falls to 4-3-1.
Clemson scored five first-half goals and added three more in the second half against the Terriers. The eight goals were the most scored by the Lady Tigers since the team defeated East Carolina 8-0 on September 9, 2004.
The Lady Tigers struck first at the 10:56 mark when Nuria Zufia sent a pass over to Courtney Foster who collected the ball on the left side of the box and sent a left-footed shot past Terrier keeper Katie McChesney. It was Foster’s second goal of the season and Zufia’s first assist.
At the 13:23 mark, Julie Bolt took advantage of a steal deep in Terrier territory and shot the ball past the keeper to the short side from just inside the box on the right side. It was Bolt’s second goal of the season.
The third goal came at the 14:50 mark when Amber Funk tried to play the ball in from roughly 45 yards away. The ball took an awkward hop past the defense and bounced over the keeper for Funk’s first goal of the season.
Following a foul, Elizabeth Jobe took a free kick from 25 yards away at 21:53 and put the ball past the Terrier wall and keeper for her second goal of the season and the Lady Tigers’ fourth of the afternoon.
Two freshmen hooked up to make the score 5-0 going into halftime as Judea Davis played a ball behind the last defender to Samantha Fortier, who kicked the ball off the outside of her right foot into the bottom corner of the goal at 38:25. It was Fortier’s third goal of the season and her first of two for the game.
The Lady Tigers opened the second half with a quick goal in the 52nd minute. Lily Boleyn played the ball from the backfield all the way through to Fortier. Fortier tracked the ball down and crossed it to Fraser Gerth, who put it in the goal for her second of the season.
Clemson made it 7-0 at the 57:10 mark when Fortier stole a ball from the Terrier defense in the box, spun to her right shoulder and fired a left-footed shot on the ground into the corner for her second goal of the game and fourth on the year.
The final goal of the match came in the 64th minute. Fortier crossed a bouncing ball from the left side of the box to Foster, who shot the ball off the bounce with her left foot. The shot hit the right post and spun into the far side of the net. The goal was her third of the season and second of the match.
“We have strung two good performances together in these last two games, which I’m really pleased about,” said Lady Tiger Head Coach Todd Bramble. “In the past, we may have played to the level of our opponent in a game like this, but we handled today’s game in a professional way and took care of business.”
“We’ve had two games in a row that were both team wins,” he added. “Today we played every player on our roster who was healthy and eligible. No matter who was in the game, the level of play never dropped off. Now we just look forward to the start of ACC play next week.”
Clemson will open the Atlantic Coast Conference season at home on Thursday, September 27 against Maryland. The match between the Lady Tigers and the Terrapins will begin at 7:00 p.m. at Riggs Field.
