Koroleva Wins Pro Tourney; Coin Ousted from French Open

Rising junior All-American Yana Koroleva defeated North Carolina signee Hayley Carter, 7-5, 6-4, in the finals of the Hilton Head Island (SC) International Tennis Federation (ITF) tournament. Koroleva, who was playing in the tournament as an amateur, emerged from the 32-player Main Draw without dropping a set en route to her second career pro title.  Carter is the No. 1 player in the 2013 recruiting class and a North Carolina signee. It was the second player with North Carolina ties that Koroleva ousted from a tournament in the past few weeks. At the NCAA Championships, Koroleva defeated Zoe De Bruycker in the round of 32 on her historic run to the quarterfinals.  Koroleva also ousted the No. 3 seed in the tournament, Piia Suomalainen of Finland in the first round.  Nelly Ciolkowski, a 2012 Clemson graduate, also played in the tournament, emerging from the qualifying draw to reach the quarterfinal round, where Carter put an end to her run.  In other action, Julie Coin, a 2005 Clemson graduate, was ousted from the French Open on Monday in the second round of the main draw with Pauline Parmentier. The second round finish ties a career best in a Grand Slam doubles event. Coin also paired with Nicolas Mahut (famous for marathon match against John Isner at Wimbledon in 2010) in the mixed doubles, but the pair was eliminated in the first round.  Elsewhere, Tiger Keri Wong advanced to the doubles finals in the $25,000 tournament in El Paso, TX before losing, 6-3, 6-3. She was in search of her third consecutive doubles title, after winning the $25,000 in Caracas, Venezuela, and winning the $10,000 in Landisville, PA in mid-May.  Wong has entered the top-500 in the world doubles rankings after her run over the past month. She currently stands a career-best 477th.
