Jenny Barton Earns ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Honor

June 22, 2006

Clemson, SC – Clemson women’s track & field athlete Jenny Barton was named to one of ESPN The Magazine’s Academic All-America teams on Thursday. Barton was a third-team selection by members of CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America). Barton was previously honored this month as a first-team Academic All-District selection as well.

Barton is the third Lady Tiger track & field athlete ever to receive CoSIDA Academic All-America honors. Clemson’s most recent honoree was Gisele Oliveira, who earned Academic All-America recognition in both 2004 and 2005. Clemson’s other former Academic All-American was Tina Krebs in 1986.

This is the second straight year Barton has been honored by CoSIDA for her academic efforts. Last season, the Toledo, OH native was a second-team Academic All-District selection. Barton, who graduated summa cum laude from Clemson with a degree in biological sciences on May 12, was also an All-ACC Academic selection for cross country in the fall. Barton was a two-time all-state performer in cross country and won the Gamecock Invitational in 2005. She also earned ACC Performer of the Week honors in cross country this past fall. Barton is also the school record-holder in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 10:59.98.
