CARY, NC – The 12th-ranked Miami Hurricanes edged #11 Clemson (18-8), 4-3, in the semifinals of the ACC Women’s Tennis Championships on Saturday afternoon. The match was not decided until the final contest at the flight five singles position where Miami’s Audrey Banada defeated Daniela Alvarez, 6-4, 6-3.
The Hurricanes won the doubles point to take a 1-0 advantage into singles play, but the Tigers were able to claim three singles contests to tie the team score at 3-3. The match then came down to the flight five singles contest where Miami clinched the match.
Clemson’s team of Daniela Alvarez and Maria Brito, 8-4. The Hurricanes clinched the point with Audrey Banada and Melissa Applebaum’s victory over Julie Coin and Alix Lacelarie, 8-6.
The Tigers won singles matches at flight two, flight four and flight six. Farah, ranked #71, defeated Staci Stevens, 6-3, 6-0 in the No.2 contest and Brito was victorious at No.4 over Starzyk, 6-2, 6-1. Salge easily won her match at No.6 against Emily Mowrey, 6-0, 6-1. In the flight one match-up, second-ranked Coin fell to #1 Bradley, 6-1, 6-4, for the second time this season. The Hurricanes’ Applebaum defeated Lacelarie at flight three, 6-1, 6-1, before Banada won Miami’s fourth point at flight five.
Clemson now awaits the NCAA’s regional selections to be played on May 13-15 at various locations to be announced at a later date.
