Aug. 18, 2011

Before school starts on August 24, Hunter Harrington will try to end the summer with a bang by qualifying for the ATP Winston-Salem Open at Wake Forest University. Harrington will join many of the top players in the world after winning the Wild Card tournament for the qualifying draw that was also held in Winston-Salem, NC.

On his way to the title, Harrington defeated Kevin Le of North Carolina 6-2, 6-4 in the first round. After defeating Le, Harrington defeated Parks Thompson, also of North Carolina, 6-2, 6-3, and in the finals defeated Harrison Richmond of South Carolina, 6-3, 6-4.

“This is a huge opportunity to play in the qualifying of the ATP Winston-Salem Open,” Harrington said. “I’ve put a lot of work in this summer with Coach McCuen and Coach Boetsch and I’ve been playing really well. Hopefully I can continue that in this tournament.”

Harrington will be starting his freshman year at Clemson this fall and is from Spartanburg, SC. He joins the Clemson team which currently has Wesley Moran, Cal Hilsman – all former number-one ranked junior tennis players in South Carolina – on its roster.

“We are really pleased with Hunter’s dedication and determination heading into his freshman year at Clemson,” said Clemson Head Coach Chuck McCuen. “Those qualities will serve him well during his career here, and are what being a Clemson student-athlete exemplifies. We wish him the best of luck in the Qualifying and look forward to his arrival at Clemson on August 24.”
