Henderson and Furbee Promoted

July 8, 2011

CLEMSON, SC – Bill D’Andrea, Clemson Senior Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs, has announced two promotions within his department. Bert Henderson has been named Director of Planned Giving and Travis Furbee has been named Director of IPTAY’s Annual Fund. Furbee will also continue to oversee the Clemson ticket office.

“When Terry Don Phillips became athletic director in 2002 his vision was to create an external affairs component within the athletic department,” said D’Andrea. “His idea was to bring all revenue sources under one umbrella. This included tickets, IPTAY, marketing, major gifs and various other areas that either support or are associated with external affairs.

“When we began to coordinate these components, we determined there were several areas that needed to be pulled closer together to maximize our resources. Today’s announcement is a key part of that process.”

Henderson will supervise major gifts and planned gifts, which will include bequests, wills and estate planning. “With the relationships Bert has built in IPTAY over the years we felt he was perfect for this role.”

Henderson has worked for Clemson since 1978 when he was an athletic trainer. He worked under Bill Foster with the men’s basketball program from 1982-84, then moved across campus to work for the alumni office in 1984. But, one year later he returned to the athletic department when he was named IPTAY’s first Associate Executive Director. In 2004, he was named IPTAY’s Executive Director. He has now worked for IPTAY for 26 years.

Furbee came to Clemson in 2007 as Assistant Athletic Director for Ticket Operations. He just finished his fourth year at Clemson after spending four years at Georgia Tech, one year as an assistant and three years as director. He also worked at Florida State as an assistant ticket manager.

“Travis has exceptional organization and management skills and will be perfect to move into the role of Director of IPTAY’s Annual Fund,” said D’Andrea.

With the staff restructuring, Furbee will oversee the Annual Fund and the ticket office, Henderson will lead Planned Giving and Bobby Couch will direct the Major Gifts division.

“It is important to understand that IPTAY will not be able to support the Athletic Department’s needs in the future when it comes to comprehensive facility goals without expanding IPTAY’s scope,” said D’Andrea.

“IPTAY will continue to pay for scholarships, Vickery Hall and various other areas, but if we really want to build these facilities, we must educate our donors about the need for private support.”
